Terminal types

Rectangular

Not intended for frequent removal. The screw must be removed to disconnect the lug. This type will not become disconnected by vibration, unless the screw comes right out. However, the electrical continuity would be affected.

Spade

The screw need not be removed to disconnect. The terminal may become disconnected if vibration loosens the screw.

Flanged spade

The screw need not be removed to disconnect, but it has a safeguard against the flange working loose.

Ring

This lug is not intended for frequent removal. The screw must be removed to disconnect. This connector is similar to the rectangular type.

Pin terminals

Pin terminals and receptacles are frequently used in low-current applications where disconnection of wires may be necessary for service or repair.

The quick-connect tab

The quick-connect male is frequently made from brass. It may be plated or bare metal. These connectors may be found in electrical appliances where a large number of connections must be made or broken, either during manufacture or for ease of service or repair. The automotive industry use this type of connector extensively.

The quick-connect receptacle

This is the female half of the quick-connect pair.

The Ross-Courtney lug

The Ross-Courtney solderless lug is made of brass as a base material and is used in an unplated state. This lug is used with a washer as a method of terminating earth wires, or as a termination to avoid the wires spreading under screw compression.

The Stanco lug

The Stanco lug usually has a base material of brass or copper with a plating to form a good contact and to avoid corrosion. This lug is often used in place of the Ross­Courtney lug with the advantage that there is no need for a washer.

Flag terminal

This multi-purpose terminal is similar to the rectangular type, but has the advantage of allowing an in-line connection and providing a convenient multi-wire termination.

The slotted ring

The screw need not be removed to disconnect the terminal, but it may become disconnected if the screw becomes loose. It has the advantage of easy connection and disconnection.

The hook

This lug is similar to the slotted ring and has the advantage of easy removal without the need to remove the screw, but will not easily become disconnected if the screw works loose.

Bimetal terminals

When using some dissimilar metals in direct contact with each other, moisture from the air can cause an electro-chemical action that causes the metals to corrode. With a cold welded junction, moisture contact area is kept to a minimum and therefore the corrosion problem is reduced. Copper and aluminium are two metals that must be protected in this way. 1 lie lug has been designed to allow the advantages of aluminium cables to be used in conjunction with standard fittings such as copper bus­bars and conductors.

The larger aluminium barrel section is metallurgically cold welded to the smaller copper tongue. Where the situation is likely to cause corrosion, a jointing compound should be used to further improve reliability.

The tee connector

Where a connection to an existing wire is required, the tee connector provides a convenient method of joining without breaking the through wire. The connector shown is an uninsulated crimp type; pre-insulated crimp types are available.

The coaxial cable connector

A quick, strong connection can be made to coaxial cables by crimping. This method of connection is popular in the radio and TV trades. As no soldering is required, heat damage to the inner insulator is avoided. Because of the simple connecting procedure, quick in-situ connection is possible. Solder-type connectors are used for high quality industrial, communications and military purposes, or where a reusable connector is required.
